Nearly 600 student leaders trained during extraordinary launch in Ghana

Nearly 600 youth were trained and equipped to lead like Jesus during the first-ever Ignite leadership conferences held in the African country of Ghana. A series of four Ignite events, made possible through the financial support of LLJ donors, took place over the summer months of 2015.

Ignite, the youth equivalent of the Encounter leadership workshop, focuses on character and integrity, helping young men and women to become powerful and positive influencers of those around them.

“I thank God for being part of the Ignite program,” writes 19 year-old Dwomoh Bernice, who attended at the Presbyterian Church in Ada in the Greater Accra area. “I never knew that I am a leader. I always see myself as an ordinary girl, but now I realize that I am an extraordinary person whose actions affect other people either positively or negatively. … I have also learned that God really loves me. He knows me by my name and made me unique, and I must be proud of that.”

Creating lasting change

According to Rev. Ahmed Kenneth, LLJ’s national representative for Ghana, this training comes at a critical time for the youth of his home country. Ghana is plagued with economic turmoil and wide-spread corruption, and he asserts that the best way to create lasting change is by reaching the leaders of tomorrow.

“At this stage they turn to listen and learn more from their peers instead of their parents,” he writes. “This is the stage where most of them get pregnant or follow bad company of friends who lead them wrongly.

“Against this backdrop, we believe Ignite is strategic and appropriate due to the changing power, and ability to help the youth remain focused with a vision to make a difference in his or her society.”

A drop in the bucket

These most recent events in Ghana are part of a rapidly growing opportunity to provide leadership training to the youth of Africa.  So far in 2015, more than 16,000 young people have experienced Lead Like Jesus’ Ignite program across the African continent.

But according to Jim Montgomery, chief international officer for Lead Like Jesus, this is just a drop in the bucket compared to what could be done with the right resources.

“For every one student we provide training and leadership resources to, we could be reaching two more – but we simply lack the funding,” he says.  “There is such a great need, and a desire among the people for change. We pray and trust that God will provide the necessary resources as He continues to open new doors.”
