Words

Jesus warns against simply giving ‘lip service’ to God. Our words—spoken in prayer or in conversation with others—are not to be spoken lightly or casually. Nor is God impressed with long speeches or extravagant promises. He looks for honest humility and trustworthy speech and actions. Can people trust that you mean what you say? Can God?

“But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”—Matthew 5:34–37

Prayer: God, I don’t’ want to be guilty of giving “lip service” to You or others. Teach me to speak and act toward You and others in a trustworthy manner. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
