We say that we want wisdom. Yet too often we struggle to find the wisdom we desire. Or we fail to consult God, choosing instead to rely on ourselves and the wisdom of those around us. Solomon’s son Rehoboam had this problem. As he began his reign, he faced the choice of how he would lead God’s people. They begged for Rehoboam to lighten their load. He asked for advice from experienced counselors. Then he went to his friends. But Rehoboam failed to consult the Lord. Tragically, Rehoboam’s choice brought unnecessary suffering for everyone, including himself. Who do you listen to?

The king answered them harshly. Rejecting the advice of the elders, he followed the advice of the young men and said, “My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier.” – 2 Chronicles 10:13-14a

Prayer: Lord, remind me that those I lead are loved by You. As I bring concerns to You, give me ears to hear. I want Your wisdom, not my own. In Jesus’ name, amen.
