Take the Time

Take the Time

The young apprentice startled his sleeping master with his words: “Here I am; you called me.” Then again: “Here I am; you called me.” And a third time: “Here I am; you called me.” Rather than being irritated or offended at Samuel’s repeated interruptions, Eli took the time to help Samuel understand what was happening and gave him specific directions regarding what to do next. How willingly do you patiently assess and respond to the needs of those around you?

A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. —1 Samuel 3:8-9

Prayer: Lord, help me develop the humility, discernment, patience, and wisdom to follow Eli’s example. In Jesus’ name, amen.
