The temptation to take shortcuts, to pull a power play and bend to the world’s methods “just this once,” can gain a foothold in our motives under pressure. When this temptation arises, it can take all the self-control we can muster to keep our hearts fixed on Jesus. Paul reminds us that the source of humble, God-honoring self-control is the Spirit. It is this type of Spirit-empowered self-control that Jesus demonstrated throughout His life, especially as pressure mounted against Him. What pressures are you facing? Where do you need the Spirit to enable you to demonstrate Jesus-like self-control?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. —Galatians 5:22-24
Prayer: Spirit, I need Your life-transforming power to shape my responses to pressure and temptation. Have Your way in me, so that my leadership honors Jesus, in whose name I pray, amen.
