Love in Action

Preparing for special gatherings can be overwhelming, at times overshadowing the meaning and significance of the events themselves. People, even God, can get left behind. Joy and thankfulness can evaporate, replaced by pressure and tension. Mary and Martha struggled with this dynamic. When Jesus visited them, Mary determined just to spend time in the presence of Jesus as their honored guest and family friend, while Martha felt the added responsibility of taking care of preparing food and serving the meal. As the holidays begin, what steps can you take to remove pressure and tension, and create space for mutual joy and thankfulness?

Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. —1 Peter 4:9-10

Prayer: Lord, as we come together to enjoy time with one another and celebrate life, let us focus on extending grace, and serving each other with joy and thankfulness. In Jesus’ name, we pray, amen.
