Not Like the Rulers of This World

Not Like the Rulers of This World

Jesus draws a vivid contrast between the way the world’s rulers lead and the leadership He expects from His disciples. It would never have occurred to Jesus to consult Pilate or Herod or Caesar for leadership advice. Their purposes, values, and perspective were the exact opposite of God’s. They were not interested in sacrificially loving or serving those they led. But that was exactly Jesus’ perspective, and the model He gives us. The contrast could not be more dramatic. What is your leadership perspective? Do you rule over or bend to serve those who look to you?

Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”—Matthew 20:25-26

Prayer: Jesus, may we bend down to serve others today instead of embracing the world’s leadership perspective. Make us like You, as we pray and serve in Your name, amen.
