Discovering God’s New for You
Discovering God’s New for You
Here we are… the beginning of a New Year – 2016! How did that happen??
Don’t you just love the word "new"? It conjures up images of something just discovered or uncovered; something that has never been used before; starting over; rejuvenated …. Add to the list!
I’ve been a follower of Jesus for many years – and sometimes it’s harder to find “new” when you’ve been at something for a long time. A couple of years ago, however, I decided to try something new with my morning devotions.
Let’s be clear at the outset – I am not a morning person. My least favorite verse (yes, you read that right, least!) in the Bible is Mark 1:35, which says, “While it was still dark Jesus got up from among them and went out to pray.” For us non-morning people that verse is a challenge. Couldn’t Jesus have waited until 10 a.m. to pray???
So my decision was to read through the entire Bible using the YouVersion app in a new translation (New Living Translation) and let it read to me while I read along. I always wanted to know how to pronounce those long, unfamiliar, “my American tongue does not go there” names, and this was my chance.
Well, in 2016 I’m beginning the third year of doing this and NEW is awesome! I’ve learned more about the people of the Old Testament; I’m more focused on what’s going on so I’ve found new story lines, etc. All because I decided to try something new!
The God of New
The Bible is full of new. Here are a few places where the word new appears:
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? Isaiah 43:19
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Revelation 21:5
New is always spectacular when God is involved. God is about doing new – the creation screams of new every year as it changes from winter to spring or spring to summer or summer to fall or fall to winter. The leaves change, the flowers bloom, the sun sets early or late, the moon has a new moon phase – it’s all new!

God loves new, and He created us new when we became followers of Jesus. We are brand new – just like a new baby. He gives us a new heart and a desire to follow Him – to live, love and lead as the Greatest Model of all time did. You remember: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV) Brand new!!
God, who is excellent in everything, will end it all by making it all new – back to the original design; completely rejuvenated; like it was never used before!
Don’t you just love the word new?!
What new thing will you do in 2016??? (And I don’t mean the resolutions that you will write down on New Year’s and break by the following week.) What’s truly new on your list? What will you learn new about God in 2016 that you didn’t know before?
